What is Natural Plan Stomach Soother™?

Natural Plan Stomach Soother™ is an all-natural treatment for stomach ulcer pain and digestive disturbances in horses. It is made from natural papaya, a pear-shaped tropical fruit, golden-yellow to orange in color, which is native to Central America and Mexico . Papaya long has been used as a home remedy for stomach distress and to comfort colicky human babies. Its most useful component is papain, which resembles the digestive enzyme pepsin. Papain is a primary ingredient in various indigestion remedies. Papain stimulates the appetite, soothes membranes of the esophagus and stomach and quiets inflammatory bowel disorders. Raw papain is used medically for enzyme replacement in pancreatic insufficiency and has anti-microbial, anthelmintic and anti-ulceratial effects.

Useful For:

  • Stopping cribbing

  • Treating diarrhea

  • Helping maintain weight.

  • Avoiding digestive upset during long trailer rides.

  • Soothing the stomachs of horses who go off their feed in stressful situations

  • Stimulating appetite upon arrival at a new location.

  • Camouflaging the taste of unpalatable medicines and electrolytes.

"We recommend Natural Plan Stomach Soother™ for both our large and small animal patients when they have digestive disturbances, stomach upset."
--Judith M. Shoemaker, D.V.M.

Why Use Natural Plan Stomach Soother™?

There are a number of ulcer remedies available to the modern horseman. However, many of them are expensive and/or cause undesirable side effects and cannot be used for extended periods of time. Furthermore, some are not permitted during competitions. Natural Plan Stomach Soother™ costs a fraction of the price of pharmaceuticals, and most horses like the taste so much they consider it a treat. Natural Plan Stomach Soother™ is made from papaya, a natural product which has no known side effects, and is extremely easy to administer either using a dosing syringe or mixed in feed. It has a strong sweet flavor that can also be used to camouflage the taste of other medicines dissolved in it.

Natural Plan Stomach Soother™ is desirable over other brands because of its quality ingredients and consistent taste. It contains no added sugar or preservatives and is concentrated to reduce volume and allow dilution for specific taste. It does not require refrigeration until opened.

Dosage

For daily maintenance, use two fluid ounces (60cc) of Natural Plan Stomach Soother™ twice a day administered with a dosing syringe, or mixed in feed. For foals, use one fluid ounce (33cc) twice a day. Raw concentrated papain may intensify the effects of anticoagulants, such as warfarin. Not tested on pregnant mares. Discontinue use if hives or other signs of allergy appear.

What Does Papaya Contain?

  • Papain-- has a soothing effect on the stomach and aids in protein digestion.

  • Vitamin A-- promotes and maintains healthy eyesight, enhances immunity, protects the lining of the digestive tract, relieves gastrointestinal problems, helps guard against certain cancers, provides anti-oxidants and builds strong teeth and bones.

  • Vitamin C-- helps protect cells from free radical damage, is required for collagen and other connective tissue formation, and helps with allergies and arthritis.

  • Calcium-- essential for bone growth.

  • Iron-- the oxygen carrier in the blood stream.

  • Niacin-- helps turn food into energy and metabolize fats and carbohydrates. It also acts as an antioxidant, destroying cell-damaging free radicals.

  • Potassium-- helps to stabilize the cardiac function, regulate nerve function, and reduce fluid accumulation.

  • Riboflavin-- required for processing fats, carbohydrates and proteins into energy. Also used for renewal and regeneration of cells and tissues.

  • Thiamin-- helps maintain normal function of the nervous system and is an aid to oxygen utilization.

What are Stomach Ulcers and What Causes Them?

The stomach produces acid to aid digestion. To prevent the acid from coming in direct contact with the stomach's lining, mucus cells create a protective coating. Stress prevents the horse's digestive system from producing sufficient mucus and moving in a normal manner. An ulcer is produced when the mucus cell layer is eroded, allowing acid to attack the stomach wall. Depending on its severity, this erosion can cause symptoms ranging from slight discomfort to life-threatening bleeding. Even a minor ulcer can cause a decrease in competitive performance.

Among the various causes of ulcers, stress is the main culprit. Intense training, which taxes the horse mentally and/or physically, confinement, pain or illness, and transportation are the main stress sources in modern competition horses .

Many horses show no classic ulcer signs, and yet when examined endoscopically have mild to moderate ulcers. Indeed, some veterinarians believe that the majority of competition horses suffer from ulcers to one degree or another. Often, after treatment, significant improvements occur in animals that were not considered to be symptomatic.
